2 Days │ Certificate of Competency | HRD Corp Claimable
Participants will gain both theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively respond to hazardous material (HazMat) spills and leaks according to NFPA 1072 standards.
Key learning outcomes include:
Identifying hazardous materials and understanding their classifications.
Taking proper safety actions during a chemical incident.
Selecting and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly, including different levels of chemical protective suits (Level B, C, D) and the use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
Recognising chemical hazards using systems such as NFPA 704 and HazChem codes.
Utilising the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) to determine isolation zones, evacuation perimeters, and appropriate response procedures.
Executing defensive tactics such as retention, diversion, diking, damming, vapour suppression, and spill containment.
Understanding basic HazMat chemistry and toxicology, including key physical and chemical properties and exposure limits.
Performing decontamination procedures for personnel and equipment.
Applying the Incident Command System (ICS) for HazMat incidents.
Conducting scenario-based mock drills to reinforce learning and assess readiness.
This course is suitable for personnel involved in workplace emergency response and chemical safety, including:
Emergency Response Team (ERT) Members
